iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17: which to buy in 2026

This year the "16 or 17?" question is settled by price tags rather than spec sheets: the gap between the two in Moldova has become surprisingly small. We compared prices in 16 stores and reached a fairly clear conclusion, with one caveat.

How much do the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 cost in Moldova?

Here is what is on sale on 01.11.2026:

The iPhone 16 128 GB is sold by 16 stores, making it one of the most widely stocked models in the catalog. The lowest price is at Gorilla, and five stores share the same price of 21,099 lei. The gap on the iPhone 16 128 GB Teal is 5,392 lei; on the iPhone 17 256 GB it is 5,570 lei.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: what changed

According to Apple, the iPhone 17 doubles base storage to 256 GB instead of 128 GB and has a 6.3-inch ProMotion display with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, Always-On, 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness, two 48 MP rear cameras, the new Center Stage front camera of up to 18 MP and the A19 chip.

In everyday use you notice the difference in two places: storage and the screen. The iPhone 16's 128 GB fills up fast with photos and 4K video, and 120 Hz makes scrolling noticeably smoother. You get used to it quickly.

How much have the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 gone up since summer?

How the lowest prices moved between 15 July and 31 October 2026:

The iPhone 16 128 GB rose the most, by about 16%. On 9 September 2026 Apple raised the US price of the iPhone 16 from $699 to $799 and of the iPhone 17 from $799 to $899. Interestingly, the iPhone 16 256 GB actually got a little cheaper: its lowest price was 17,749 lei in summer and is 17,499 lei now.

Which is better value: iPhone 16 256 GB or iPhone 17 256 GB?

In our view there is not much to debate here. With the same storage, the gap in lowest price is 630 lei (17,499 vs 18,129 lei), about 3.6%. For that money you get a new generation: a 120 Hz screen, the A19 and new cameras, and when you sell it in a few years the newer model usually holds its value better. The iPhone 16 256 GB only makes sense if it is sold noticeably cheaper, on a promotion for example.

There is one catch, though: the iPhone 16 256 GB is in only 5 stores, and the lowest price is at just one of them (Gorilla). If that store does not suit you, the next price up is already higher.

When the iPhone 16 128 GB still makes sense

The iPhone 16 128 GB remains the cheapest way into a current iPhone, from 15,899 lei. It suits you if:

• you don't shoot much video and keep your photos in the cloud;
• your budget is firmly capped at about 16,000 lei;
• you need the phone for messaging, banking and social media, not gaming.

The gap to the iPhone 17 256 GB is 2,230 lei. If 128 GB is definitely enough for you, that is a real saving. If not, paying extra for the iPhone 17 is better value than buying the iPhone 16 256 GB.

Price cuts at the end of October

Towards the end of October a few stores did cut prices, on both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 17 Pro. We only counted cuts that held until the 31st:

The iPhone 16 cuts are small (400–836 lei), the iPhone 17 Pro ones go up to 2,400 lei, but the price gap between generations stays large. If a store cut its price for just one weekend, you won't find it in the table: we were interested in offers that actually held.

Black Friday: which prices to use as a benchmark

If you are looking at the iPhone 16 128 GB, remember its summer price: 13,799 lei. A November "discount" to 15,999 lei is just today's lowest price, not a gift. For the iPhone 17 256 GB the benchmark is 18,129 lei; anything above that is no reason to rush to the store.
